Hakufu Sonsaku (孫策伯符 Sonsaku Hakufu) is the main female protagonist of the series, a cheerful brawler who loves to fight—especially against stronger opponents. She received intense martial arts training from her mother and was also trained in tea ceremonies and flower arrangements. She is the cousin of Koukin Shuuyu, the (half?) sister of Sonken Chūbō, and the daughter of Goei and Bundai Sonken.
Her magatama currently appears as a B-rank color (silver), but her true capabilities without using her Suiryuuken are those of an A-rank (golden color). When she draws on the Suiryuuken, her strength reaches a "Special S-rank," surpassing ordinary S-rank fighters.
Soul History[]
Hakufu's legendary counterpart, Sun Ce, was born in 175. He was a ferocious fighter known as the Sho Haou of Kotoh and succeeded his father Sonken, but in the end he died at the hands of Ukitsu in 200.
Appearance[]
Hakufu is a beautiful girl with a voluptuous figure and long, flowing strawberry-blonde hair that reaches down her back and covers her ears. She has bangs that fall over most of her forehead, and two distinctive strands of hair stick up from the top of her head.
Hakufu is usually seen in her Nanyo Academy uniform, which consists of a red plaid skirt, a yellow sweater vest over a white collared shirt, white socks, and brown loafers.
Personality[]
Hakufu is usually kind-hearted but prone to childish outbursts when she does not get her way. She is extremely headstrong and rushes into situations and battles without thinking, often exposing herself to severe danger. At times she behaves like a stereotypical "brainless beauty," showing moments of low intelligence and a complete lack of common sense—such as extreme naivety toward others' true intentions or an inability to see the bigger picture around her.
Hakufu loves to fight but strongly opposes killing or using deliberate, cruel violence against her opponents. Despite her destiny to conquer all the schools, she simply wants to battle strong foes and, at her core, fights for the sake of fighting.
Story (Manga)[]
Introductory Arc[]
Hakufu is first seen training at her original home before joining her mother, Goei, for lunch; the meal is abruptly interrupted when Hakufu suddenly swings at her, only for Goei to block the attack with a fish.
Hakufu then goes to school, where she becomes a laughingstock for not being as coordinated as the other students. Feeling discouraged and unsure of herself, she regains her spirit after seeing two men boxing in the courtyard and eagerly joins in, defeating one of them with a single blow.
Hakufu is then approached from behind by a man named Hannou, whom she follows in hopes of getting a serious fight. Hannou boasts about his stats and points out that she cannot be an E-rank fighter because she lacks a magatama. After some persuasion, he agrees to fight her using hidden blades in his rings; although he manages to tear her clothing, Hakufu lands a punch to his face. Enraged, Hannou accuses her of "cheating" by being far stronger than an E-ranked fighter.
Later, Hakufu sneaks back into her house but is caught by her mother, who decides to give her the magatama she wore when she was fifteen. Goei tells Hakufu that she can no longer live there and must move to Tokyo.
Hakufu is next seen at the gates of Nanyo Academy, where she defeats around twenty-seven students, remembering her mother's advice to take down thirty opponents to make a lasting first impression. Her streak is finally stopped by a B-ranked fighter named Gakushuu, who defeats her even after allowing her a free kick. Hakufu is later shown having lunch with her cousin Koukin; afterward she wants to challenge Gakushuu again, believing her earlier kick weakened him, but Koukin stops her and takes her home to rest.
The Big Four Arc[]
After barely making it to school on time, Hakufu runs to class only to be ambushed by Kannei, who attacks her without explanation. Hakufu does her best to fight back but can do little against the overwhelming difference in power between them. As Kannei moves in for another strike, Hakufu is saved by an unlikely ally, Shimei Ryomou. Kannei attempts to fight Ryomou as well, but she defeats him in a single blow before turning her attention to Hakufu.
Ryomou and Hakufu begin their battle, and Hakufu is quickly outclassed in every way; Ryomou is even more skilled than Kannei and does not allow Hakufu to land a single hit before throwing her into a wall. Hakufu still manages to stand and continue fighting, forcing Ryomou to get serious. Their clash is interrupted by Saji, who distracts Ryomou long enough for Hakufu to strike and knock off her eyepatch. Enraged, Ryomou responds with a choking technique that seemingly breaks Hakufu's neck, but it has no lasting effect—Hakufu grabs her and slams her head into the ground.
Hakufu's Broken Spirit Arc[]
After sneaking out of the house, Hakufu is seen with two men who flirt with her until they are interrupted by a strange man shouting about "basics." She watches as the stranger fights a crowd of opponents but steps in when one of them pulls a knife on him. Together they drive the fighters away, and after patching up the holes left by the battle, the man introduces himself as Genjou Kakouton of Kyosho Academy. He rushes off when the police arrive, leaving his repair kit behind; Hakufu later uses it at Nanyo Academy to patch up the holes she makes while training there.
Toutaku's Retaliation Arc[]
Hakufu is next seen training with Koukin in one of the most basic fighting styles, and although she has only just begun, she progresses rapidly. The two are then shown preparing to take on a group of fighters who appear to be from another school.
Story (Anime)[]
Ikkitousen[]
Hakufu is first seen at the gates of Nanyo, where she challenges and defeats many students before being beaten fairly easily by Gakushuu. An injured Hakufu is taken in by her cousin Koukin, who brings her home and finds her mother Goei already there, announcing that she will be staying with them.
Later, Hakufu goes to the gym to retrieve her Sacred Bead, which she accidentally left behind. While searching, she is attacked by Kouha Kannei, a powerful member of the Big Four. She is saved by another Big Four member, Shimei Ryomou, but soon discovers that Ryomou is no ally when she turns on Hakufu and fights her as well. Their battle spills into the hallway, where Ryomou strangles Hakufu into unconsciousness; however, Hakufu manages to get back up and savagely counterattacks, nearly beating Ryomou to death before Saji knocks Hakufu out from behind, ending her rampage.
Still frustrated by her loss to Ryomou, Hakufu later goes out and meets a strange woman who demonstrates impressive martial arts skill by effortlessly defeating two men. Hakufu then encounters Genjou Kakouton, who is being ganged up on by fighters from another school, and helps him fend them off. Afterward, she begins practicing the basics of fighting, as Kakouton suggested.
Hakufu eventually battles Shigi Taishiji, who has already beaten Koukin senseless. She is quickly outmatched by Taishiji's power and skill but refuses to give up; although she loses, her determination impresses Taishiji and earns his respect. Hakufu is later seen at Yoshu Academy, intent on taking on the entire school after learning that its leaders literally stabbed Taishiji in the back, leaving him paralyzed and unable to fight. Slipping into the same berserk state she displayed against Ryomou, she decimates Yoshu's fighters.
Hakufu then learns about the great fighters tournament and accompanies Koukin and Gakushuu to face their first opponents from Yoshu Private School. She is unable to fight or watch Ryomou's match because she must escort Gakushuu for medical treatment. On the way, she is ambushed by Kannei, who claims he is acting on the orders of Nanyo's leader, Enjutsu. Hakufu defeats Kannei, but not before he seriously injures Koukin's right arm, leaving him unable to participate in the tournament. Hakufu then fights Unchou Kan-u from Seito Academy and is quickly overwhelmed by Kan-u's power; she manages to injure Kan-u after entering her dragon state, but the match still ends in Hakufu's defeat, even though Kan-u technically surrenders, allowing Nanyo to advance to the third round. Hakufu later fights her old friend Kakouton but is unable to land a solid hit, as he focuses exclusively on attacking her legs. She is left disappointed when Nanyo is eliminated from the tournament following Ryomou's loss to Houkou Kakuka.
Hakufu later visits the hot springs with her family, where they meet her old teacher Shungai Chouko, who challenges both Hakufu and Ryomou simultaneously. The pair defeat him through coordinated teamwork. They then encounter Ryofu, and Hakufu hears Ryomou pledge that she will protect Hakufu at all costs.
While at the pool with Koukin, Hakufu meets Chuuei Toutaku, who secretly places a curse on her. Goei later tells Hakufu that the only way to break the curse is to force its caster to remove it. Hakufu, accompanied by Ryomou, travels to Rakuyo High School and is forced to fight Ryofu, nearly killing her while in her dragon state. The battle ends when the dying Toutaku releases the curse from Hakufu's body.
Hakufu then goes with Ryomou to confront Saji, who reveals that he has been an agent of Rakuyo High School, seeking to rule from the shadows and manipulate Hakufu's mind. However, Hakufu's body is taken over by Toutaku, who attempts to kill Saji but is stopped by Ukitsu. After recovering, Hakufu agrees to fight Ukitsu in front of the school. She again enters her dragon state and becomes uncontrollable, beating Ukitsu to the brink of death until Koukin intervenes and stops her. In the aftermath, Hakufu and Ukitsu decide they will no longer follow their destined paths and remove their Sacred Beads.
Ikkitousen: Dragon Destiny[]
Hakufu is first seen at her house, where she is attacked by the newly acquired fighters from Kyosho. Hakufu, Koukin and Goei were able to defeat them, and they then meet Kakouton, who tells them why Kyosho is attacking Nanyo, stating that one of Nanyo's fighters, Kannei, had attacked their friend Kakuka.
Hakufu is next seen beside a bedridden Ryomou in her own house, angered at the situation bestowed upon her, as Ryomou was barely clinging to life when they found her. Hakufu's own dragon begins to take over, and before it fully does, Goei chops the back of her neck stopping the transformation.
Hakufu then sneaks off to Kyosho, wanting to face Moutoku Sousou hoping to end the fight between the two, but is instead met with Kan-u, who fights her in place of Sousou. Kan-u is able to best Hakufu easily in speed, skill, and strength, but Hakufu is able to continue as she is able to awaken her dragon, being able to fight on the same level. Their fight is then interrupted by Sousou, who is able to decimate Hakufu with one shot, ultimately defeating even a possessed Hakufu.
Hakufu is next seen waking up in a cave by her old master Chouko, who awakens her dragon on purpose, trying to help tame it. Chouko is able to defeat Hakufu and allows Ukitsu to fight Hakufu, as she was the only one who could help tame Hakufu's dragon now. While Ukitsu fights Hakufu on the outside, Hakufu thinks back to her town and school, where she eventually meets her father, who tells her not to give up yet as it was not yet her time. Her dragon is then seen going off to the Battle of Red Cliffs.
Hakufu appears at the Battle of Red Cliffs where she confronts a fully demonized Sousou, being able to best him in the fight having full control of her dragon. Sousou desperately tries to attack Gentoku Ryuubi, seeing that he could not defeat Hakufu, but is unsuccessful as Gentoku was also able to gain control of her dragon, and with the combined efforts of both the thunder and water dragons as well as the Dragon Jade, Hakufu and Gentoku were able to defeat him once and for all.
Hakufu is later seen working at a diner with Ryomou, hoping to gain enough money to travel around the world and fight all sorts of other fighters.
Ikkitousen: Great Guardians[]
In this series, Hakufu returns as a main character and is the leader of Nanyo Academy, where she motivates Koukin and her colleagues in the Big Four to take on part-time jobs so they can participate in a martial arts tour. During their job at a Chinese restaurant, she gets in a fight with Kanu, but their dispute is interrupted by a girl named Chuubou Sonken, who is looking for her sister, the leader of Nanyo, which turns out to be Hakufu.
Hakufu gets Chuubou acquainted with her friends, and even rescues her when she is kidnapped by En'in. When she encounters a returning Ryofu Hosen, Hakufu does not recognize her (she is forgetful with names and faces). After Ryofu, Chuubou and Hakufu enjoy themselves at karaoke, Ryomou finds them and is shocked to see Ryofu.
Later Hakufu learns that Gentoku has been possessed by Genpou and she also possessed Ekitoku Chouhi and Shiryuu Chou-un, as well as attempting to possess Koumei Shokatsuryou. She heads to Seito with Gakushuu and the two fight Ekitoku and Chou-un. The duo win and ask what happened claiming that the reason for the outbreak was Genpou.
Hakufu then finds Genpou in an alley suffering from heat exhaustion. She takes Genpou home, only for her to leave. Later Hakufu finds Ryofu and follows her, only to find Genpou again who claims that Hakufu is the only person who was ever nice to her. Genpou kisses Hakufu, and as a result Hakufu is possessed, but thanks to Chuubou, Hakufu returns to normal and she, Chuubou, and Koukin head to Rakuyo to find the girl along with Kakouton. Ryomou soon joins afterwards and Hakufu and Ryomou battle Genpou successfully beating her. Genpou is then accepted, but later on, she and Chuubou leave.
Ikkitousen: Xtreme Xecutor[]
Hakufu is first seen running into a group of thugs attempting to kill Gentoku and Bachou Mouki. Hakufu claims she got separated from Koukin while shopping and proceeds to ask about Kan-u, whom she impersonates. The thugs decide to attack Hakufu, but she wards them off and saves Gentoku.
Impressed by her skills, Mouki begs Hakufu to be her teacher. Hakufu gives her a qualifying test, which is to defeat Gakushuu. Mouki punches Gakushuu who fakes being defeated. Hakufu at first takes advantage of Mouki, not knowing how to teach a student, but then decides to teach her for real.
After hearing about a big fighters tournament, Hakufu wishes to go, but falls asleep on her bus and ends up going in circles, missing her boat much to her dejection. In lieu of her time without Koukin, Hakufu visits Chuubou and Genpou.
During their stay, Hakufu and Genpou go skinny dipping, then Hakufu strips Chuubou and pulls her in, as well as showing her ability to control water. Later during a picnic, she noticed Sousou watching her. Sousou informs Hakufu that the fighters tournament was a trap and that her friends are in trouble.
Hakufu and Gakushuu then go to Seito to see if Gentoku is okay, only to witness the sight of Gentoku turning to stone as a result of being unable to cooperate with her dragon.
Hakufu, Gakushuu, Koumei, Hakugen Rikuson and Chou-un take a boat and decide to help their friends after Kakouton gives Hakufu a sword.
After getting separated from the group once docked on the island, she reunites with Mouki and the two end up fighting a snake. After being beaten back initially, the two eventually get the better of the snake and move forward.
After disguising as a horse with Mouki, Hakufu finds Koukin, Shikou Soujin, and Ekitoku in the cell and knocks out the guard with an energy blast before the group goes to find Kan-u and Ryomou. The group finds the others and they are confronted by Kentei, who overwhelms them as Teni shoots down Hakufu, causing Mouki to chase after her. Hakufu then awakens and kills Kentei, which turns out to be Chuutatsu Shibai's corpse. Hakufu later cuts Kentei down and the group returns to their schools, where Hakufu parts with Mouki, who vows to surpass her. Later on, Mouki challenges Hakufu and the two charge at each other in the final moments of the anime.
