Sonken Chuubou is a new character introduced in Shin Ikkitousen, the direct sequel to Ikkitousen. She is the sister of Hakufu Sonsaku, at least in terms of their shared father (see the "Image Gallery" section).

She first appears in the opening chapter of the first volume as a new student entering Nanyo Gakuen, where she has not yet received her magatama. Ukitsu (still alive in the manga) is tasked with giving her the magatama of Sun Quan (see the "Image Gallery" section).

Like her sister, the "soul" in her magatama takes the form of a water dragon, water being the natural element of the Sun lineage.

In the anime, she makes her first appearance in the third Western Wolves OAV.

Soul History[]

During the Three Kingdoms era, Sonken inherited the position of emperor of the Wu Kingdom after the death of her older brother, Sonsaku. This makes her the "historical" leader of Nanyo Gakuen in the event that Sonsaku died and failed to overcome her destiny.

Sun Ce (Sonsaku) died in 200 A.C. before becoming king, while Sun Quan (Sonken) died in 252 A.C. after a reign of fifty-two years.

Appearance[]

Chuubou is a small girl with brown hair styled in twin-tails and lighter brown eyes.

Story (Manga)[]

Sonken first appears at the start of Shin Ikkitousen, where the story follows her complicated first day at Nanyo Gakuen, beginning with being targeted by bullies. She is quickly taken under the care of Roshuku Shikei.

After Shikei takes her to a place where she can change, Ukitsu appears and gives Sonken her magatama. Shikei then produces a dao sword—the Hyakuhekitou, which Sonsaku previously used in the manga during her fight with Ukitsu—and gives it to Sonken as well.

At the same time, the school comes under assault by Asaemon Yamada and "Indara" (stylistically written インダラ in the manga), two Toushi from the Kansai region.

Asaemon wipes out the students effortlessly and even manages to sever both of Roshuku Shikei's hands in the process. Sensing the danger, Ukitsu removes her weights and tells Sonken that she needs to escape.

While Ukitsu faces Indara and her underlings, Sonken escapes with Asaemon in pursuit.

Arriving on the rooftop with no means of escape, Sonken is about to lose hope, surrender, and hand over her magatama to Asaemon when Shiryuu Chou-un arrives. Overwhelmed by Chou-un's presence alone, Asaemon is forced to retreat.

Indara appears shortly afterward and targets Chou-un, who is unable to fight back, while Ukitsu is defeated as well.

After Chou-un's defeat, Sonken surrenders, having given up hope. However, Indara ignores her surrender and orders her underlings to beat or kill Sonken. In a final effort, Ukitsu stands, grabs Sonken's hand, and runs with her. Pursuing them, Indara throws the Hyakuhekitou—which Sonken left on the ground—at Ukitsu, impaling her and knocking her through a window.

Sonken then loses control of her dragon and completely annihilates the enemy forces. Asaemon returns after sensing Indara is in danger but is also quickly defeated.

Kyoshou Gakuin's Three God Pillars (Koumei Jokou, Bunken Gakushin, and Shungai Choukou) and Seito Gakuen's Koumei Shokatsuryou and Kanshou Kouchuu arrive on the scene and stop Sonken, preventing her from killing Indara. Sonken then falls unconscious.

Indara stands up, grabs one of Asaemon's katana, and attempts to kill the unconscious Sonken, but senses someone behind her. It is the returning Sonsaku. When Indara tries to slash at her, Sonsaku effortlessly breaks the blade and punches Indara in the face at full power, sending her through several walls and floors and causing the entire building to collapse.

Afterward, Sonken remains unconscious while those still in Kanto discuss her. Sonsaku learns that Sonken is her sister, and Master Choukou calls Goei to inform her of the events in Kanto. (At this time, Goei is traveling with the party to Kansai to reclaim the stolen magatama of Sonsaku, Sousou, and the other Toushi of the Kanto region during volumes 19 to 24 of Ikkitousen.)

Since Genpou Saji has been dead since volume 13 of Ikkitousen, Nanyo lacks one of its Big Four, and there is a chance that Sonken might eventually take that position. This is further supported by the fact that she is already classified as, or at least possesses the power of, an S-rank fighter, as indicated on her character page on the game site (see the "Image Gallery" section).

Story (Anime)[]

In the anime, she appears for the first time in the third and final episode of Western Wolves. She helps Hakufu defeat a group of fighters, unaware of their true relationship. She tells Hakufu that she is a fighter but, for some reason, does not have her magatama with her. Afterward, she says goodbye before Hakufu has a chance to ask who she really is.
