Chuubou Sonken is initially introduced as the supposed younger sister of Hakufu Sonsaku, although it is later revealed that she is actually Shōkyō (Xiao Qiao) and has come to Kanto to see what kind of man her destined husband, Koukin Shuuyu, is. Despite this revelation, Hakufu still accepts her as a sister. Chuubou is well read and is often seen reciting quotes from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel.

Soul History

The two Qiao of Jiangdong are sisters of the Qiao family who lived in the late Han Dynasty era. Their given names have not been recorded in history; they are simply called Da Qiao (literally "Great Qiao") and Xiao Qiao (literally "Young Qiao"). They were born in Wan County.

Da Qiao married the warlord Sun Ce (Sonsaku Hakufu), who established the foundations of the Kingdom of Wu during the Three Kingdoms period of China, while Xiao Qiao married General Zhou Yu (Shuuyu Koukin), who served Sun Ce and then his successor Sun Quan (Chuubou Sonken (true)).

Appearance

Chuubou is a very beautiful and graceful girl with long, light brown hair that reaches down her back and is tied with a hairband. Her hair is also long enough to cover her forehead. She is usually seen wearing a small light green vest over a dark green sundress, along with a short-sleeved dress shirt and a ribbon at the collar.

Personality

Chuubou is portrayed as a very gentle girl who never actually fights. She is also consistently kind, treating everyone she meets warmly, whether they are old comrades or new acquaintances.

Chuubou is first seen in the hotel where Hakufu and Unchou Kan-u are fighting. She arrives in search of her "sister," who turns out to be Hakufu, and is taken home with her, much to Koukin's surprise, as neither he nor Hakufu knew of her existence. She later introduces herself to Koukin, Hakufu, and Goei, and becomes upset when Koukin calls her by her family name, asking him instead to use her given name as he does with Hakufu. Chuubou is then seen bathing with Hakufu when Koukin accidentally walks in on them; she is surprised to learn that Koukin and Hakufu are used to seeing each other naked. Shy by nature, she blushes whenever Koukin touches her, and it becomes clear that she has feelings for him.

She is introduced to the Big Four, who remark that she does not look like Hakufu's sister. Later, Enin attempts to rape Chuubou in an effort to force Hakufu to give up her position as leader, but the Big Four intervene and rescue her. Chuubou is also shown to be a very skilled cook. When the real Saji gains mind control over Hakufu, Chuubou helps Koukin bring Hakufu back to herself.

Eventually, Chuubou admits that she is not Hakufu's sister and reveals that her real name is Shoukyou, confirming that she is destined to be Koukin's wife. She apologizes for deceiving them and explains that she only wanted to get close to Koukin. Still confused, Koukin asks why she chose that moment to tell the truth, and she replies that she realized Koukin loves Hakufu and that Hakufu is far more suitable for him and much closer to him than Chuubou. Koukin then advises her not to let fate control her and reassures her that she is still their sister.

Chuubou later helps them fight the real Saji and eventually befriends him. In the final episode, she thanks Koukin, Hakufu, and the others for giving her wonderful memories. Hakufu and Koukin tell her to come back and visit, reminding her that she will always be their sister. Chuubou then leaves with the real Saji as they head toward her village.
